Conference TrainingThe Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) offers training opportunities for those who must follow environmental regulations or get certain licenses or professional registrations. MPCA staff believes training is an integral part of helping people understand and comply with the rules and regulations which they must follow. About 4,000 people attend one or more of the approximately 50 training events held throughout the year.

To find information about specific classes, click on the area of interest at the right, and then scroll through the series.

Note that training dates, locations and fees are subject to change or cancellation. While you may be able to fill out registration forms electronically, the MPCA is unable to accept electronic submittal at this time. The MPCA can accept credit card payments using Visa or MasterCard.

Hazardous Waste Training

Ten Steps to Hazardous Waste Compliance
This workshop is beginning level training designed for operators of businesses that generate a hazardous waste, permitted facilities, consultants, local units of government, and anyone else who may need to understand how to comply with the Minnesota Hazardous Waste Rules.

During the training session, MPCA staff will explain the10 steps to compliance: 1) Evaluate waste and determine generator size. 2) Get an EPA identification number. 3) Get a license (and applicable fees). 4) Choose and mark containers. 5) Accumulate and store hazardous waste. 6) Transport and dispose of hazardous waste. 7) Manifest hazardous waste. 8) Plan for emergencies. 9) Train employees.10) Keep records.

Solid Waste Operations Issues Refresher Workshops
This one-day refresher workshop is intended for those who currently hold a Type II or Type III Operator/Inspector certificate.  It covers current issues and provides information on landfill operational topics, such as asbestos, waste screening and new regulations. Half of the day is spent in classroom training and the other half at a landfill site. Dress appropriately for the outdoors.  (6 contact hours)

Municipal Solid Waste and Demolition/Industrial Waste Landfill Operator Certification
Landfill operators and inspectors need MPCA certification before they can operate or inspect landfills in Minnesota. This course is designed to provide Municipal Solid Waste Type 2 operators and inspectors, Industrial Type 3 and Demolition Type 3 operators and inspectors with everything they need to know to operate a Minnesota landfill – from liner design to leachate collection. The MPCA offers a certification exam at the end of each seminar.

Renewal Application for Solid Waste Disposal Facility Operators/Inspectors
To renew their certification, Type II operators and inspectors must have 18 contact hours; Type III must have 6 contact hours. This renewal form is for eligible operators and inspectors who need to renew their certification.

Wastewater Examination Session
Minnesota Statutes Chapter 115.73 requires that a facility may not operate a wastewater treatment facility unless the facility maintains at least one person that is certified in a class equal or higher than the class of the facility and also has full and active responsibility for the daily on-site operation of the facility. See the requirements to be eligible to take a wastewater operator exam below.

Collection System Basic Seminar

Seminar sessions cover proper operation and maintenance of wastewater collection systems to help the operator gain a better understanding of basic operation and maintenance of wastewater collection systems. Topics include inflow/infiltration, lift stations, collection system cleaning, traffic control, safety, collection system math. Land Application of Biosolids - Basic Course

This basic introductory course covers site selection, application rates, nitrogen management, reports, field analysis of potential sites, verification of site/soils data, management problems, and offers individual assistance, if needed. Intended for those who want to become certified as Type 4 operator or inspector. (This course, plus six months experience, is a prerequisite for taking the Type 4 exam.) Land Application of Industrial By-Products
This course will cover industrial by-product topics such as: who needs a permit, analysis requirements, record keeping and reporting, site selection, application rates and site management. This course will NOT prepare you for passing the Type 4 certification test. Students should bring a calculator. Intended for: Individuals responsible for management and land application of industrial by-products.

Nutrient Removal Workshop
(6 wastewater contact hours)
This workshop is intended for operators at wastewater facilities that have been (or will be) designed for biological nitrogen and/or phosphorus removal, and are seeking the skills to optimize their process.  Nitrification, denitrification, and biological phosphorus removal will be explained, along with discussions of system configurations for nutrient removal, process control applications, and troubleshooting.  Part of the day will be spent in a classroom setting, and the remainder spent at a wastewater facility for hands-on training. No exam.

Underground Tank Training

Contractor Certification Class
This class is intended to train and certify individuals to install, remove or repair underground storage tanks and piping according to Federal and State Codes.  It includes contractor responsibilities, OSHA Safety and Right-to-Know regulations, projects management parameters, and critical junctures.  It also covers corrosion control principles, leak detection methods, site assessment procedures and spill clean-up procedures.

Contractor Recertification Class
To remain a certified contractor a refresher class is need once every four years.  This one day class will give a review of the initial course, provide a regulatory overview and any updates pertinent to underground storage tanks.  *Pre-Online work is required.
